NIGHTINGALE OF INDIA~ LATAMANGESHKAR
Lata Mangeshkar was born on 28 September 1929 (birth name- Hema Mangeshkar) in Indore Madhya Pradesh, is an Indian playback singer and music director. The lady with a sweet magical voice recorded over 1000 songs and was the queen of her time, she is also the best-Known and most respected singer in India. Her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, was also a classical singer and a theatre actor. In 1942, when Lata was 13, her father died of heart disease. Master Vinayak (Vinayak Damodar Karnataki), the owner of Navyug Chitrapat movie company and a close friend of the Mangeshkar family, took care of them. He helped Lata get started in a career as a singer and actress.
In a career spanning till now, Lata Mangeshkar has brought joy, tears, and nostalgia not just with people of this country but across the span of the globe, she started her career by singing the song “Naachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari”, which was composed by Sadashivrao Nevrekar for Vasant Joglekar’s Marathi movie Kiti Hasaal (1942), but the song was dropped from the final cut. Then she sang her first Hindi song “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu” for the Marathi film Gajaabhaau (1943).
Lata moved to Mumbai in 1945 when Master Vinayak’s company moved its headquarters there. She started taking lessons in Hindustani classical music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan of Bhindibazaar Gharana.
She has worked with most renowned music directors of cinema. Her songs like “Pyaar Kiya to Darna kya”(1960) from Mughal-e-Azam “Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh”, from Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai (1960) “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo” (literally, “Oh, People of My Country”) in the presence of Jawaharlal Nehru, then the Prime Minister of India & many
She also holds the credit of being the first Indian to perform in the Royal Albert Hall in the UK
Lata Mangeshkar has won several awards and honors, including the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan (1969), Padma Vibhushan (1999), Zee Cine Award for Lifetime Achievements (1999), Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1989), Maharashtra Bhushan Award (1997), NTR National Award (1999) and many other awards and honors.
She aced every genre of singing effortlessly and her voice connected with the listener blending in like sugar and water. Being one of the most humble singers, Lata has conquered and enthralled her audience for the right reasons. Lata was titled Queen of Melody, Nightingale of India, Voice of the millennium, the camera-shy playback singer whose songs captured the hearts and imaginations of millions of her admirers around the world.
