Geeta Dutt was well recognized for her rich, soothing, and mellifluous voice, which had the ability to imbue all kinds of emotional feelings into each and every song she sang. She originally hails from a small town in Bangladesh. Later on, her parents left everything behind and moved to Calcutta and then to Bombay to provide a promising future for their children. Geeta was taken under the patronage of K. Hanuman Prasad, who helped her trained and groomed her singing skills before launching her into the Indian music industry.

In 1946, she got the opportunity to set her foot into the Indian musical space in a mythological film Bhakta Prahlad. She was only given 2 lines to sing but astonished everyone with her magical voice. She sang many devotional songs and had made a stereotyped impression as a melodious queen of spiritually inclined songs and sad songs. In 1947, she sang for the Do Bhai film, whose soundtrack became an immensely hit topping the chart list. Her songs stole millions of hearts of music lovers and were given the title of Bangal Ka Jadu. In 1951, with the release of Baazi, she totally altered her image of the religious singer, exhibiting her remarkable unique ability to switch from classical music to contemporary music without missing a beat.

From 1947 to 1949, she presided as the reigning queen of playback songs and was lauded as one of the leading female singers of all time. But Destiny had played a different card, which turmoil and destroyed her fandom. Her husband, Guru Dutt,’s illicit affairs and demise had torn her down completely. But she recovered from the trauma and came as an unsung fighter to give her last extraordinary performance in Anubhav. Unfortunately, she succumbed to liver cirrhosis on 20th July 1972.
